News #24: Flash Bang Band, Hella Better Dancer and The Self Help Group

Apologies for the lack of posts over the last week – we’ve been very busy enjoying ourselves at loads of shows, culminating in the The Great Escape festival last weekend. We will share more on TGE over the coming weeks – in the meantime here is some musical news that’s got us excited over the past few days.

Flash Bang Band – ‘If You’re Driving’ – NEW Single & Video

We have a special affection for Flash Bang Band, as they played on the bill at the first show we ever co-promoted. They are quite bonkers in a very lovable way, but also have a knack of unearthing great hooks and then playing them very, very loud.

They have an album coming out on ‘At The Helm’ later in the summer, but preceding this is new single If You’re Driving, which is released on the 3rd June. The video follows a pair of feet on an interesting day-out, we have no idea what it’s about but like it regardless!

Hella Better Dancer – Sleep (demo)

We were very excited to see Hella Better Dancer play in Brighton last week. We are going to post an interview with them soon, but in the meantime have a listen to the band’s last output ‘Sleep’ (it may even still be available to download for free)

The Self Help Group – BBC Introducing: The South

‘Not Waving, But Drowning’ by The Self Help Group continues to be one of our favourite albums of the year to date. We’ve also been lucky enough to catch the band playing live on a few occasions and would highly recommend you do as well, if the opportunity presents itself. If not, then they recorded a live session for the local BBC station. Their first offering is ‘The Rapture’, which might well be our current favourite of theirs – and definitely a highlight of the live set. Enjoy!

News #23: New Video – Peter Bruntnell ft. Rumer – ‘Played Out’

Although we were aware of Peter Bruntnell the musician, our knowledge barely stretched further than knowing of him as a ‘cult’ figure on the UK Americana scene. We had a few of his songs from various Loose Records compilations, enjoyed them and had always intended to delve into the back catalogue. However, as is often the way, we never got round to it and those tunes became just pleasant surprises whenever they came up on shuffle.

A new friendship with a Bruntnell super-fan (#1) put Peter back on our radar and based on this recommendation we caught one of his shows at SXSW this year. I remember it being incredibly loud, Peter having a certain swagger and a set crammed full of quality songs. I also remember a man down the front eyes closed, taking it all in and singing every word back at Peter (super-fan #2).

The point of this preamble is that it would seem that Peter Bruntnell is an artist worth investigating, and for those like us who haven’t got round to it in the past, Loose Records have kindly made the job very easy due to the upcoming release of, ‘Retrospective‘ , ”a 17 track compilation of Peter’s songs from 2004′s Played Out, up through until 2011′s Black Mountain U.F.O.album”.

We didn’t need anymore convincing, so this beautiful version of ‘Played Out’ with Rumer just whets the appetite even more!

For those of you wanting to catch a Peter Bruntnell live show then we will be doing our level best to get to Palmfest, put together by the good people at Brighthelmstone Promotions

News #22: Brandy Zdan ‘Mourning Dove’ – Free Download (ltd)

Mourning Dove 2

Brandy Zdan recorded some amazing music as part of the duo, Twilight Hotel. She is now branching out on a solo career and the first offering, ‘Mourning Dove’, has been made available today (and as a free download for a limited amount of time).

We already knew that Brandy had a great voice and this stripped back tune lets us appreciate it in all its glory.  The apparent simplicity of the guitar work lets you focus on the vocal and the layers of emotion that are evident as the song unfurls. You can literally feel the anguish, pain and confusion in the refrain, ‘we came this far without tearing it apart’.

As the song itself spreads its wings, anticipation grows but instead of giving you the big ending you were expecting, it stops abruptly. For me this is a master stroke as instead of feeling cheated, I’m going straight back to the beginning and playing it again!

This is Brandy’s first offering from her debut EP, Lone Hunter, which will be out later this year.

News #21: Roxanne de Bastion – Album Launch & New Video

the_real_thing_cover

Regular followers of this blog will know that we have been big fans of Roxanne since the spiky-pop gem that is ‘Red & White Blood Cells’ wriggled its way into our eardrums (YOU!,…WHITE!, YOU!,…WHITE! etc).

We’ve kept an eye on Roxanne (in a non-creepy way) since our first interview and were excited to get our hands on a copy of debut album, ‘The Real Thing’ – which is produced by Gordon Raphael (The Strokes, Regina Spektor). We were not disappointed as it is a fine record – one we will review in detail soon.

The album is officially released today (19th April) and was preceded earlier this week by a new video for one of the album highlights, ‘Some Kind Of Creature’.

Pop over to Roxanne’s website to find out how to get your hands on, ‘The Real Thing’: http://www.roxannedebastion.com/

News #20: Turnstile Junkpile Video & Launch Show!

It’s been a few months since we last caught up with Turnstile Junkpile (In Bloom #3) but we now know a little about what they’ve been up to in that time – producing their debut video.

We were already fans of the tune, Time Is Running Out, and the video puts a nice little spin on the phrase.

The band will be playing a special show to officially launch the video. It’s FREE entry and support will be from Paul McClure and Lazy Heart Parade. More details here: http://www.facebook.com/events/219893054818995/

Turnstile Junkpile are a fine live band so we wholeheartedly recommend you pop down if you are in the area!

News #19: Curxes – Further Still. New Video & Free Download

We happily admit to not being the coolest kids on the block (to old), but we do our best to follow up on tips from people whose taste we trust.

Many friends were telling us to catch up with the output of Brighton based Curxes, and our introduction, new tune ‘Further Still’ , does not disappoint.

The track is still (at time of writing) free to download here: http://curxesuk.bandcamp.com/track/further-still-free-download

Hope you enjoy x

News #18: Kill Moon, The Strokes and Larkin Poe & Thom Hell

We hope you’ve all had a good weekend – after attending a few shows last week we chose the ‘sleeping & eating’ option – taking it nice an easy.

We did, however, want to share some of the musical happenings that caught our attention this week.

Kill Moon – Shine

Regular readers will know that we’ve got a bit of a crush on Kill Moon. New tune ‘Shine’ was released last week and we reckon it’s a solid step forward for the band – most definitely on our ‘ones to watch’ radar

The Strokes – One Way Trigger

This new release from The Strokes (free MP3 download via the bands website) has caused quite a stir on our twitter feed. It is fair to say that we’ve not paid much attention to the band since This Is It came out – that said we quite like this – odd, interesting and catchy.

Larkin Poe & Thom Hell – I Belong To Love

A complete change of genre but, in our opinion, another example of an excellent ‘pop’ single. someofitistrue faves Larkin Poe have teamed up with Thom Hell for an album, The Sound of the Ocean Sound. Have a listen and let us know what you think.

News #17: Josienne Clarke & Ben Walker, The Self Help Group, American Werewolf Academy and Porquesi

Happy New Year everyone!

We are very much looking forward to 2013, numerous interviews have been lined up and, as always, there is loads of excellent new music to share. So, let’s get started with this weeks tunes – which we have sorted in order – quietest to loudest!

Josienne Clarke & Ben Walker

This week saw Josienne win ‘Female Vocalist Of The Year 2012′ at the Fatea Awards. Our congratulations go out to Josienne – the ‘Homemade Heartache EP’ that she put out with Ben Walker was one of our favourite EP’s of 2012.

Champion of all things Folk, Bob Meyer – of Bob’s Folk Show fame very kindly shared this live performance from Josienne & Ben (which you can also download for free!)

The Self Help Group – New Single ‘Needles’

The Self Help Group release their first single from album, ‘Not Waving, But Drowning’ which is being released by our friends at Union Music Store. We hope to bring you an interview when the album comes out, in the meantime enjoy new single & video, ‘Needles’.

American Werewolf Academy – Miserable Living

Things are definitely starting to get louder with this new tune from our hard rocking friends, AWA. Another excellent slice of rock-punk-pop, from Dallas, TX!

(I seem to be having all sorts of problems posting Bandcamp in WordPress, so if you cannot play directly please follow the link and go have a listen.)

Porquesi – Live at Iceland Airwaves 2012

We’ve already mentioned in previous dispatches how Porquesi blew us away with an ultra-loud set at Airwaves ’11 – on this evidence it would seem business as usual in 2012! You can download this for free from the Soundcloud site – and apparently it is called ‘Manboobs’.
